Episode Transcription

Kim Sutton: I know you probably noticed the name of today’s episode is Stepping On The Scale. And while I do want you to know that my weight is a concern of mine at the moment, I am not talking about the scale in terms of my weight, weight loss, nutrition, fitness, anything like that. When I’m talking about stepping on the scale today, I am talking about, I am looking to scale up my business big time.

In the past month, I realized that while I wanted to grow my business for some time now, and I wanted to increase income, I have been trying unsuccessfully to do most client work myself, and still am trying to do a lot of internal work myself as well. While I do have support in place, graphic design, web design, podcast setting and show notes, there is so much work that I need to delegate if I’m going to take my business to the next level.

We as entrepreneurs need to get past the roadblock that is constantly telling us that we need to be the one doing everything. This all came to a head in the last month when I was working on a huge product launch and was neglecting my sleep severely. I was getting all the work done, but there was so much involved that I could have been delegating elsewhere. And rather than going to sleep at 3:00 AM, yes, I was still getting my eight hours, okay. Maybe not eight hours, five to six hours. I could have been delegating some of the other tasks, some of the tasks that I didn’t need to be personally involved with to other team members had I just had them in place. The launch that I was working on went quite successfully. And now, the client has brought me in to look at an even bigger project where I will be handling a lot of different clients at the same time. I realized with this, that it’s time, it’s time to scale up in a proper way. It’s time to bring on product managers and client managers. It’s time to bring on a team manager so that I don’t need to be managing the team members who are helping accomplish all this great work for clients.

One of my former business coaches, Frederick West, who you can find in an earlier episode of the Positive Productivity Podcast told me once that Jesus only had 12 disciples. This was in reference to the fact that in 2015, I grew my business way too big, way too fast. Within a period of a month, I brought over 15 new team members because I had also brought on over 30 new clients. And it all came crashing down because nobody was managing the work that needed to be done and the people that needed to do it. I was trying to do it all. So while I do have grand plans of scaling up my business, this time, I realize I need to hire slow, fire fast and set up systems for every step along the way. It’s time for us all to step on the scale and see how we can grow our businesses in a smart, effective, efficient and money generating manner.

If you have any questions about how I’m doing this, I want you to just keep on listening to future episodes of the Positive Productivity Podcast, or head over to kimsutton.com and click on the Ask Kim tab to learn about the systems that you can set up in your business to do the same.

This is not a journey that I’m going to be going through alone, as I know so many of you are going through the same processes right now. And whether you’re listening when this episode is released into the future, I’m always here to support you during your own scale up process. It’s time to remember that you don’t have to be doing it all, that you deserve to sleep, spend time with your family, eat nutritious meals that don’t come out of a box or the fast food lane, and take time for doctor’s appointments. It’s time for you to have time to go on dates with your significant other, take a honeymoon that you should have gone on six years ago. I’m speaking from personal experience there, and indulge in all the activities that mean the most to you outside of work.

So take the first step today. Start getting your system set up and then begin hiring slow. Bring on the team members who will make it possible. Now, with all this said, go forth and make it a positive and productive day.
